Cet article propose une analyse critique de l’engagement humanitaire, au regard de la perception et du traitement réservés au migrant dans La mer à l’envers (2019) de Marie Darrieussecq, écrivaine majeure de la littérature contemporaine française. En mobilisant la phénoménologie, la sociocritique et la psychologie, La présente réflexion met en lumière les enjeux éthiques et esthétiques liés à la figure du migrant. Dans le roman, la rencontre entre Rose, une psychologue française, et Younès, un jeune Nigérien sauvé en Méditerranée, révèle les contradictions d’un humanisme contemporain fragilisé par l’indifférence et l’inhospitalité. Mais l’écriture esquisse également la possibilité d’un autre rapport à l’Autre, fondé sur l’empathie et sur l’expérience de l’engagement humanitaire. Cette étude démontre que Darrieussecq, en donnant voix et visage au migrant, déplace le regard porté sur l’exil et interroge les impasses de l’humanisme officiel. À travers ses choix narratifs, l’écrivaine inscrit la migration dans une double dynamique : celle d’une mise à l’épreuve des valeurs héritées et celle d’une reconstruction symbolique du lien social. Son roman s’érige, ainsi, en un espace de réflexion critique et de réparation éthique, où l’écriture devient médiation entre mémoire, souffrance et dignité retrouvée. Abstract This article offers a critical analysis of humanitarian engagement, in light of the perception and treatment of the migrant figure in La mer à l’envers (2019) by Marie Darrieussecq, a leading voice in contemporary French literature. Drawing on phenomenology, sociocriticism, and psychology, this study sheds light on the ethical and aesthetic issues surrounding the representation of the migrant. In the novel, the encounter between Rose, a French psychologist, and Younès, a young Nigerian rescued in the Mediterranean, exposes the contradictions of a contemporary humanism weakened by indifference and inhospitality. Yet Darrieussecq’s writing also sketches the possibility of another relation to the Other, one grounded in empathy and in the lived experience of humanitarian commitment. This study argues that by giving the migrant both voice and face, Darrieussecq reconfigures the gaze cast upon exile and questions the dead ends of official humanism. Through her narrative choices, the author situates migration within a dual dynamic: that of testing inherited values and that of symbolically reconstructing social bonds. Her novel thus stands as a space of critical reflection and ethical restoration, where writing becomes a mediation between memory, suffering, and the reassertion of human dignity.
